What is intranasal red light therapy?

Intranasal red light therapy involves using red light through the nose. Using a special nasal laser, you shine the laser light directly onto the capillaries in your nose, allowing the mitochondria to be quickly reached via the blood. Why through the nose?

The red light is absorbed by your body through the nose. This is an ideal location because the skin there is thin, well supplied with blood and close to the surface. This allows the red light to easily reach the blood and treat your body from the inside out.

Because the light can directly affect the blood, you are essentially treating all the blood cells in your body. This strengthens the mitochondria, meaning that the red light does not have localised effects, but can treat the entire body from the inside out. How does intranasal red light therapy work?

In intranasal red light therapy, red light with wavelengths around 650 nanometres is shone into the nasal cavity using a small lamp. This light reaches the nasal mucosa, where it is absorbed by the blood cells. This stimulates the mitochondria in the cells, which increases ATP production, activates cell metabolism, inhibits inflammatory processes and improves blood circulation.

Because blood circulates continuously throughout the body, this stimulation can spread quickly. So you are not treating a specific area, but supporting your entire system via the nose. This makes intranasal red light therapy suitable for:

This form of light therapy falls under photobiomodulation (PBM), which refers to the biological effect of light on cells. These are some of the scientifically proven effects of intranasal PBM:

  • Improvement of cellular energy production: red light activates the enzyme cytochrome c oxidase, which increases ATP production. This is the basis for most of the health benefits of red light.
  • Reduction of oxidative stress: the balance between free radicals and antioxidants is improved, reducing oxidative stress in the cells. This allows cells to function better and are less prone to damage.
  • Modulating effect on inflammatory processes: red light has an anti-inflammatory effect by reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and stimulates regenerative processes.
